What is Ramadan the sultan of 11 months?

Fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam, the rest of which also testify to the oneness of God: the prescribed daily prayers, almsgiving and pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

The fasting month of Ramadan, an Arabic word for intense heat and scorched ground, is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar (Hijri) calendar, established in 638 by the second caliph of the Prophet Mohammed, Omar. The month of Ramadan is considered the most venerated, blessed and spiritually-beneficial month of the Islamic year. During this month prayers, fasting, charity and self-accountability are particularly emphasized and all obligatory religious observances are further encouraged at this time as this month was called by the Prophet, “the month of my people, [Ummah].”

Das muss sich wohl auch der Kandidat der religiös-konservativen Partei AKP, Abdullah Gül, gedacht haben, denn erst beim dritten Anlauf erreichte er die notwendige Mehrheit für das Amt des Staatspräsidenten. Gül, dessen Wahl im April nach Einschreiten der Militärführung scheiterte, erhielt nun in dem 550 Sitze zählenden Abgeordnetenhaus mit 339 Stimmen die im dritten Wahlgang nötige einfache Mehrheit. Nach Drohungen der Militärführung, die sich als Hüterin der Trennung von Staat und Religion versteht, hatte das Verfassungsgericht im Frühjahr einen ersten Wahlgang annulliert. Der 56-jährige ehemalige Hochschuldozent Gül ist nun elfter Präsident der türkischen Republik. Die türkische Lira reagierte auf die Entscheidung mit leichten Kursgewinnen. Aufgrund der US-Subprime-Krise war sie im August, wie nahezu alle Schwellenländer-Währungen, unter Druck geraten.
